This exterior view shows the domed marble rotunda of the Jefferson Memorial, set at the edge of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. Architect John Russell Pope designed the building, which was dedicated in 1943 on what would have been Jefferson's 200th birthday, and its Ionic colonnade and open plan were meant to echo classical monuments. The photographer, Oscar Seidenberg, is named on the caption card, but the card gives no date, so the picture's exact year remains uncertain.
