The Jefferson Memorial rises on the south bank of the Tidal Basin, its white dome reflected in the water when the light is right. Designed by John Russell Pope and dedicated in 1943, the rotunda honors the third president and the author of the Declaration of Independence. Looking across the basin from the north side, as this view does, frames the memorial against the cherry trees that ring the water, a relationship the planners intended as part of the setting. The building's neoclassical form deliberately echoes Jefferson's own love of classical architecture, seen also at Monticello.
