Set on the south shore of the Tidal Basin, the Jefferson Memorial appears here framed by the trees that line its grounds, a detail the caption card records alongside the monument itself. Designed by John Russell Pope and modeled loosely on the Pantheon in Rome, the marble rotunda was dedicated in April 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. This view, dated to late January 1945, shows the memorial only about two years old and already a fixed part of the capital's riverside landscape.
