Cherry trees in full bloom frame the white marble of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin in this April view from about 1947. Designed by John Russell Pope, the memorial was dedicated in 1943 on what would have been Jefferson's 200th birthday. The basin's cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912, and their spring bloom has drawn crowds to the water ever since, making the pairing of monument and blossoms one of the capital's most familiar seasonal scenes.
