Two elk heads hang on the wall of the library at Sagamore Hill, Theodore Roosevelt's home in Oyster Bay, New York. Roosevelt built the house in the mid-1880s and lived there for most of his adult life. The trophies reflect his lifelong interest in hunting and natural history, and the room's crowded shelves reflect his prolific reading and writing. Dated to about 1910, the photograph shows the house in the years after Roosevelt left the presidency, when he was a private citizen again. The rustic, book-lined room offers a glimpse of the working study where he spent much of his time.
