Sagamore Hill, the Roosevelt family home on Long Island's Oyster Bay, is the subject here, shown alongside Theodore Roosevelt's children. Roosevelt built the house in the mid-1880s, and it remained the family's center long after he entered national politics. By the time this photograph was made around 1904, he was president, and Sagamore Hill was where he returned to rest and to be with his large family. The print comes from the Edward S. Curtis Collection at the Library of Congress, though its details come from an old caption card and are not fully verified. It offers a glimpse of the private life behind a very public presidency.
