Chelan Butte Apples crate labels come from the apple-growing country around Chelan Falls, in north-central Washington, where irrigated orchards along the Columbia River made the region a major source of fruit shipped east by rail in the early twentieth century. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's brand before they ever saw the fruit. The bright colors and orchard scenery were meant to make a crate stand out on a grocer's shelf, and today the labels preserve a record of how packing houses marketed the Northwest's orchard economy.
