Lake Chelan, in north-central Washington, gave its name to this crate label, which marks it as a product of one of the state's best-known fruit districts. Labels like this one were pasted onto wooden apple boxes in the early twentieth century, when growers in the region were shipping fruit by rail to markets across the country. The bright lithographed art was meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded grocer's shelf, and it also built a regional reputation that outlasted any single orchard. Look closely at the wording and colors, which show how packers sold place and quality as much as the apples themselves.
