Lake Chelan, in north-central Washington, is a long glacial lake whose narrow valley and warm, dry summers made it a productive place for orchards, and this crate label advertises apples grown there. Fruit crate labels like this one were printed in large runs and pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's brand before they ever opened a shipment. Their bold colors and pictured fruit were meant to catch the eye on crowded grocery shelves, which is why surviving examples now serve as a record of early twentieth-century commercial lithography and of how Western orchard districts marketed their produce nationwide.
