Washington apple crate labels were among the most colorful commercial printed goods of the early twentieth century, and this one is a product of the J.D. Hamilton Fruit Company, a grower and shipper whose name appears across the top of the design. Crate labels like this were pasted onto wooden boxes to sell fruit to buyers in distant markets, so the artwork had to catch the eye of a grocer or shopper far from the orchard. Many of these labels leaned on lush color lithography, bright scenes of snowcapped peaks, blossoms, and fruit, and on brand names meant to suggest quality and place. Their survival today offers a window into how the Northwest marketed its orchards to the rest of the country.
