Few objects capture the early twentieth-century Pacific Northwest fruit trade as neatly as a crate label. This one, titled "Apple Kids," shows the bright, cheerful style that growers used to catch the eye of buyers in crowded city markets. Labels like this were printed in large runs and pasted onto wooden crates, so a single design could travel across the country on railcars and reach grocers from coast to coast. Washington's orchards, fed by irrigation in the eastern part of the state, became a major source of apples during this era, and the illustrated labels helped growers brand fruit that might otherwise look like every other crate on the dock.
