Crate labels like this one were the advertising of their day. Growers in the Pacific Northwest shipped apples east by rail in wooden boxes, and each box was dressed with a colorful lithograph meant to catch a buyer's eye on a grocer's shelf. The "Mr. Apple" name, a cheerful top-hatted figure, was the sort of mascot packers used to build a recognizable brand, so buyers could ask for fruit by label rather than by grower. Prentice Packing's label is a useful reminder that fruit crate art, once thrown away after a box was emptied, is now prized as a window into early twentieth-century commerce.
