Crate labels like this one were pasted onto the ends of wooden apple boxes so that buyers, often in distant eastern cities, could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. The "Mr. Apple" name and its bright, cheerful figure were designed to be eye-catching on a crowded grocer's shelf or market stall. Washington State became a major apple producer in the early twentieth century, and its growers and packing houses relied heavily on colorful labels like this to build brand loyalty. Look closely at the lithography, which shows how commercial printers of the era used bold color to sell an everyday agricultural product.
