Hy-Land Kids is a crate label, a piece of commercial art meant to catch a buyer's eye on a wooden box of Washington apples. Labels like this were printed in bright lithographed colors and often featured children, animals, or cheerful characters to make the fruit appeal to families. Washington State became a major apple grower in the early twentieth century, and its packing houses relied on such labels to distinguish one shipper's fruit from another on crowded grocery shelves. The "kids" theme shows how growers tried to link their produce with the home and the next generation.
