Chelan, a lake town in north-central Washington, gives this crate label its name, and the "Chelan View" brand pairs that place with the apples packed inside. Fruit crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Washington's orchards, fed by irrigation from the Columbia River system, became a major apple district in the early twentieth century, and the bright, colorful lithographed labels of that era were part of how growers competed for shelf space and reputation.
