Spinner Fruit Corporation's crate label, printed for apples grown around Yakima, Washington, is a small piece of the state's packing-house history. Yakima Valley became one of the country's leading apple districts after irrigation projects in the early twentieth century made its dry eastern slopes productive, and growers shipped their fruit in wooden crates dressed with colorful lithographed labels like this one. Such labels were meant to catch the eye of buyers in distant markets, so the bold lettering and bright fruit imagery were as much advertising as identification. Today they survive as a record of how regional brands competed on store shelves.
