The label's name, "O-fine-O," is the detail that sets it apart from the many apple crate labels on this board, most of which trade on a single word or a sunny landscape. Washington apple growers in the early twentieth century packed their fruit in wooden boxes and pasted colorful lithographed labels on the ends so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a brand at a glance. Labels like this one were printed in large runs by commercial lithographers and sold to packing houses, which is why the same artwork often turns up on crates from different shippers. Notice how the designers leaned on bold type and bright fruit imagery, a style meant to catch the eye across a crowded produce stall.
