Chelan, in north-central Washington, sits on the shore of the long, narrow lake that shares its name, and its orchards were among the state's best-known apple districts in the early twentieth century. Crate labels like this one were printed to catch the eye of buyers on crowded produce docks and store shelves, so the lakeside view was meant to suggest clean water, open country and fruit grown in a healthy place. Labels of this kind were often lithographed in bright colors and sent out by growers' cooperatives, which used them to build a brand name for the region's fruit across the country.
