Crate labels like this one for CLIFF Brand apples, packed by Chelan Falls Orchards, show how Washington growers sold their fruit in the early twentieth century. Chelan, in the north-central part of the state, became a major apple district after irrigation from the Columbia River and its tributaries made the dry hillsides productive. Wooden shipping crates carried these lithographed labels to eastern markets, where the bright colors and pictured scenery were meant to catch a buyer's eye on a grocer's shelf. Because the label served as the brand, it tells us as much about how growers marketed their fruit as it does about the apples inside.
