Crate labels like this one were the sales tools of the Pacific Northwest apple trade, and this example carries the name of Chelan Falls Orchards, a grower in the Columbia River country of north-central Washington. Its "Falls Brand" design would have been pasted on the end of a wooden box so that buyers at distant produce markets could identify the fruit before opening it. Labels of this kind were printed in bright color lithography, often with orchard scenes, mountains, or bold lettering meant to stand out in a crowded rail car or warehouse. They are now prized as small pieces of regional commercial art and as records of how growers sold their fruit a century ago.
