Chelan Falls, a small community on the Columbia River's Chelan area in central Washington, was known for its orchards, and this crate label carries the name of one of them, the Falls Brand. Apple crate labels like this one were printed in large runs and pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Bright color lithography, a brand name, and a locale on the label were all part of selling the fruit as much as the apples themselves. Labels from the early twentieth century like this one now survive as a record of how Washington's orchard industry marketed its crop.
