Most apple crate labels of the early twentieth century promoted a particular orchard district, and the Dainty Maid brand is one of many that carried the name of Washington's fruit country across the country by rail. Crate labels like this one were pasted onto the ends of wooden boxes so that buyers in eastern markets could recognize a grower's fruit from across a crowded produce floor. Their bright lithography, often featuring women, children or idealized landscapes, was designed to sell an image of freshness along with the apples. Notice how the brand name, rather than the variety, is set in the largest type, a sign that the grower was building a reputation for a name buyers could ask for by name.
