Lake Chelan, in north-central Washington, is a long glacial lake whose warm, dry slopes made it a productive orchard district in the early twentieth century, and this crate label carries the Trout Brand name used by the Lake Chelan Fruit Growers cooperative. Labels like this one were printed in bright colors and pasted onto wooden shipping crates so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit on a crowded rail platform or a grocer's shelf. The illustration and lettering were meant to sell the apples before the crate was ever opened, which is why such labels are now valued as examples of commercial lithography. Look closely at the typography and the ink colors to see how the designers balanced regional pride with the appeal of a national market.
