Crate labels like this one were the main advertising for apples grown in the Pacific Northwest and beyond in the early twentieth century, when fruit shipped by rail to distant markets in wooden boxes. This example carries the "State Seal" brand name and comes from the Emmett Fruit Growers, a cooperative associated with Emmett, Idaho, a town in the Treasure Valley that was known for its orchards. Cooperatives like this one pooled members' fruit, packed it under a shared brand, and used bold color lithography to make their crates stand out on crowded grocers' shelves. Looking closely at the design, you can see how growers relied on pictorial and typographic appeal to sell a product the buyer could not inspect beforehand.
