The Capitol Brand label is built around its name, which may have echoed a state capital or the national Capitol and was meant to suggest a trusted, dignified product. "Fancy" was a packing grade that growers used to set their best apples apart from lesser fruit. From about the 1880s into the 1930s, printed crate labels like this one were pasted onto wooden boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's brand. Many were lithographed in bright colors, and today they show how fruit was sold before supermarkets and branded packaging.
