Few crate labels from the Pacific Northwest carry a place name as evocative as Lake Wenatchee, which here is paired with the Cascoa Growers brand. The Wenatchee Valley in central Washington became one of the country's major apple-producing areas in the early twentieth century, when irrigation from the Columbia River system turned dry sagebrush slopes into orchards. Growers' cooperatives like this one used colorful lithographed labels to set their fruit apart on crowded railroad and grocery shelves, and the scenic names often promised a fresh, mountain-country origin. Labels of this kind are valued today as both fruit-industry records and examples of commercial lithography.
