Few crate labels carry the name of a Norwegian novelist, and this one, marked Alexander Kielland Brand, pairs that name with the Wenatchee Valley of central Washington. Kielland (1849–1906) was known for socially critical novels and realist fiction, so the brand probably chose his name to appeal to buyers with Scandinavian roots, though the record does not say so. Crate labels like this were printed in bright color to stand out on crowded grocery shelves. The Wenatchee district became one of the best-known apple-growing areas in the United States, so its name here signals where the fruit came from.
