Owl Brand is the name that sets this label apart, and the words Pajaro Valley tie the fruit to the apple-growing country around Watsonville on California's central coast. Apples were a significant crop there from the late 1800s, and the cool, foggy climate near Monterey Bay suited varieties that could travel well on the rail journey east. Crate labels like this one were lithographed in color and pasted onto wooden shipping crates, so the artwork did the work of advertising in stores and on loading platforms. It is worth noticing how each brand tried to stand out from dozens of others competing for a buyer's attention.
