Pajaro Valley, along the Monterey Bay coast near Watsonville in California, was known for its apple orchards, and this crate label is named for that growing region as well as for the Buffalo brand. Fruit crate labels like this one were printed in bright color lithography and pasted onto wooden shipping crates so that buyers in eastern cities could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Labels of this kind helped build regional identities for produce, turning a valley's name into a mark of quality. Their vivid illustrations and typography now make them prized as examples of early commercial printing and advertising.
