Pajaro Valley apples, grown in the fertile flatlands around Watsonville on the central California coast, are the focus of this crate label, which carried the Buffalo brand name. Fruit crate labels like this one were printed in large runs and pasted onto wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's product on the grocer's shelf. Brand art of this kind, with bold lettering and bright color, was a key tool in the packing-house trade of the early twentieth century, when shipping by rail made regional fruit a national business. Labels such as this one now survive mainly as ephemera, showing how growers marketed their produce before supermarkets and packaged goods changed the trade.
