Red Star Brand names a specific grower's fruit, and the wording places it in the Pajaro Valley, the flat farmland around Watsonville on the central California coast, where apple orchards once covered much of the ground. Crate labels like this were printed in bright color lithography and pasted onto wooden boxes so that apples shipped by rail would stand out to buyers in distant markets. Because the design was meant to sell a brand as much as a fruit, it shows how California growers competed for customers far from home.
