Lake Wenatchee is a small lake in the Cascade foothills of central Washington, and the name on this crate label ties the fruit to a specific valley rather than to the state at large. Apple crate labels like this one were printed to catch the eye in a crowded packing house and on a grocer's shelf, using bold color lithography to sell a brand as much as the fruit inside. Wenatchee grew into one of the country's leading apple-shipping centers in the early twentieth century, and labels such as this one carried the region's name east by rail. Look closely at the lettering and the illustration, which show how growers used graphic design to build recognition for their fruit.
