Harvey S. Firestone, the Akron, Ohio, tire manufacturer, is the subject of this glass negative, dated February 24, 1923. Firestone had founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1900 and built it into one of the largest rubber makers in the United States, a rise closely tied to the growth of the automobile in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio working in that era, produced many portraits of public figures like him. The plate shows the streaks and blemishes typical of glass negatives whose original coatings have deteriorated over time.
