The record names Thomas S. Butler and "Theo. Roosevelt," with a date of February 14, 1923, on this glass negative. Theodore Roosevelt the former president died in 1919, so the second name most likely refers to his son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who was serving in the federal government at the time, though the record does not confirm this. The National Photo Company made thousands of Washington-area portraits and news pictures in the 1910s and 1920s, which is why its glass negatives document so many officials and visitors. Herbert A. French gave this example to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
