The title marks this negative as the 178th anniversary of the birth of John Paul Jones, the Scottish-born naval officer who became a founding figure of the U.S. Navy, dated July 6, 1925. The title also names a Roosevelt, but the record notes that the wording is unverified, so the identity of the man pictured should be treated with caution. Jones was born in 1747 in Kirkbean, Scotland, and his remains were moved to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1905, which helps explain why anniversaries of his birth drew naval attention. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
