Dated to 1850 or 1851, this half-plate daguerreotype captures San Francisco's harbor in the first full rush of the gold years, when ships from around the world reached the bay and many were left at anchor as their crews headed for the goldfields. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-coated copper plates, and their mirror-like surfaces show detail best when tilted in the light. The plate gives a direct look at a port changing faster than almost any other in the country.
