San Francisco grew from a Spanish mission and presidio founded in 1776 into a boomtown after the 1848 gold rush, when the harbor filled with ships and the population swelled within a few years. Views of the city from this era often show steep streets, wooden buildings, and the bay, the features that made it a gateway to the American West. Pictures of the city carry extra weight for later viewers because the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of its downtown.
