Rather than the dockside scenes often linked to the 1934 strike, this silkscreen focuses on public speaking, a subject the catalog record highlights alongside the longshoremen and their unions. The waterfront walkout began in May 1934 and spread along the West Coast, reaching its bloodiest point on July 5, known as Bloody Thursday, when police fired on strikers. Anton Refregier made the print years later, between 1940 and 1948, so it looks back on that upheaval as a turning point for organized labor in the city.
