This color halftone carries a bilingual title, "Vue de San-Francisco" in French and "vista de San-Francisco" in Spanish, and it reproduces a lithograph designed and printed by Deroy. The original view dates to the decades after the Gold Rush, when San Francisco expanded from a small settlement into a busy Pacific port. Halftone printing, which translated continuous tones into dots of ink, became common in the 1890s, so this print records an earlier scene through a later process. The dual-language title hints at the international trade and immigration that shaped the city.
