Dressed in loose trousers, short jackets, and tasseled caps copied from French colonial infantry in North Africa, these men display the Zouave style that swept American militia companies in 1860. The image is a Library of Congress copy, made in 1961, of an original tintype, and the record credits James F. Gibson, born in 1828, as the photographer. Portraits like this predate the war, when the flashy uniforms signaled drill-field pride more than battle experience. Within a year, many such companies had been called into Union service, and the Zouave look had become one of the most recognizable images of early 1861.
