The record identifies this glass negative as a portrait bust of Judge W.S. Rogers, photographed in New York, though the title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been independently verified. Bain's agency worked as a press photo service in New York in the early twentieth century, supplying newspapers with images of public figures, events and street life. Its negatives, now held by the Library of Congress, form one of the largest surviving pictorial records of that period. Because the glass plates were made for quick reproduction in print, many carry only brief captions, so the sitter's identity and the bust's origin are worth checking against other sources.
