Paul Taylor appears here in a Carl Van Vechten portrait taken on January 12, 1960, during the period when Taylor was dancing with the New York City Ballet and sharing its stage in works such as Episodes, the Balanchine ballet with Webern's music. Van Vechten, the writer and photographer who was a central chronicler of the arts in New York from the 1920s through the 1960s, made hundreds of sittings with dancers, composers and performers, and his studio portraits are valued for their candid intensity. Taylor went on to form his own modern dance company in 1954, which later became one of the most celebrated troupes in American dance, so this sitting captures him at a transitional point in his career.
