A sketch of the penthouse apartment associated with architect Paul Rudolph at 23 Beekman Place in Manhattan, dated to after 1965. Rudolph, a leading American modernist who led the Yale School of Architecture in the early 1960s, was known for sculptural, layered interiors, and a private residence gave him room to test ideas about space and light apart from client commissions. Beekman Place is a quiet residential enclave on the East Side, close to the United Nations headquarters, so the setting is part of the picture's story. The drawing's title was supplied by Library staff, so the specifics of the design are open to closer study.
