This glass negative shows the soprano Mary Garden in a bust-length portrait, made by the Mishkin studio in New York. Garden, born in Scotland, became one of the best-known opera singers of her era, admired for her acting as well as her voice, and she created the title role in Debussy's *Pelléas et Mélisande* in Paris in 1902. The photograph belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency that supplied images to newspapers. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting is uncertain.
