Steamers crowded against the piers of Baltimore's harbor give this view its focus, a working waterfront photographed around 1905 by the Detroit Photographic Company. The company's color-tinted views were sold widely as picture postcards and souvenir books, and this print belongs to the large Detroit Publishing Company collection now held by the Library of Congress. Baltimore was then a major port for coastal and Chesapeake Bay shipping, and the paddle and screw steamers tied up along its wharves carried passengers, freight and produce up and down the bay. The picture records the busy maritime trade that shaped the city's growth in the early twentieth century.
