This stereograph stands apart from other park views on the board because its catalog entry names a couple walking through Fairmount Park as a subject in their own right. Laid out along the Schuylkill River and enlarged in the 1850s and 1860s, the park was already one of the largest urban parks in the country and a favorite spot for leisurely outings. Made in 1870, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, a parlor device that merged two slightly offset photographs into one image with apparent depth. It captures the park's public life before the 1876 Centennial Exposition brought it wider fame.
