A terrace crowded with well-dressed strollers gives this stereograph its character, set in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The park had grown into one of the largest municipal parks in the country by 1870, and its wooded hills and river views drew the city's middle and upper classes for Sunday outings and leisurely walks. Stereograph cards like this one were made as pairs of nearly identical photographs, which a stereoscope fused into a single three-dimensional scene. The Library of Congress catalogs this card in the Marian S. Carson Collection, and its title was written by Library staff rather than taken from the original card.
