Six carved apostles are the focus of this view of Amiens Cathedral in northern France, a building whose sculpture ranks among the finest of the French Gothic period. Construction began in the early 1220s and proceeded quickly, so the church has a rare unity of style, and it is among the largest medieval cathedrals in the country. This glass negative dates from about 1916 to 1917, when the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that issued views of places around the world, was producing its series, and France was in the middle of the First World War. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
