Rome's Archbasilica of St. John Lateran is the city's oldest church and the cathedral of the bishop of Rome, which gives it a formal rank above St. Peter's. The site dates to the reign of Constantine in the early fourth century, and its facade was rebuilt in the 1730s, so the stone in a view like this reflects centuries of work. This glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Italian sites for a broad public in the years around 1916 and 1917. Streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating are visible on the glass, so the finer details may look uneven.
