Few Roman interiors are as sweeping as the nave of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the basilica on the Via Ostiense that tradition holds was built over the apostle's tomb. A fire in 1823 gutted much of the church, and the rebuilding that followed kept its early Christian plan, so the long colonnades and coffered ceiling in this view reflect 19th-century restoration. The glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1928, when the National Photo Company was documenting Italy, and it was copied later. Its streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of the original coating, which lends the scene a faintly weathered look.
